Above is the same GIF image, but with the height and width specified in the HTML, allowing the browser to reserve space for it before the image has been downloaded.

Above is the same JPEG image, but with the height and width specified in the HTML, allowing the browser to reserve space for it before the image has been downloaded.

Although both images appear exactly as in the previous example, the browser can allocate the correct amount of space for each image before it has been downloaded, thus the layout of images and text on the page does not change.
